Thoracic Surgical Oncology
I completed my training in Cardiothoracic and Peripheral Vascular Surgery at Evangelismos Medical Centre in 1989, and was first appointed as Consultant in Thoracic Surgery in January 1990 in Athens. I came to the Royal Brompton Hospital in April 1994 and worked here as Senior Registrar in Thoracic Surgery until July 1997, specialising also in Sarcoma Surgery. I was appointed as Thoracic Surgeon to the Royal Brompton in December 1997.
I am the Senior Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, which is the designated centre for all Thoracic Sarcoma Surgery for London and the South East of England. All patients are discussed at the regular Sarcoma MDT with my oncology colleagues at the London Sarcoma Service.
My main interest is in Thoracic Surgical Oncology. My particular area of expertise is pulmonary metastasectomy and I have performed more than 350 metastasectomy operations for soft tissue and bone sarcomas, as well as other primaries. I regularly see sarcoma patients for second opinion. I have special interest in extended resections for all thoracic malignancies, Pancoast tumours, tumours of the mediastinum and chest wall / sternum, as well as surgical palliation of airway obstruction, and applications of Video Assisted Thoracoscopy.
My research interests include pulmonary metastasectomy, surgery for sarcoma, chest wall / sternal resections,extended resections for lung cancer, staging of lung cancer, airway stenting, post-thoracotomy analgesia.
I have given more than 50 lectures to National and International meetings and published 30 scientific papers on thoracic surgical topics in peer reviewed journals, and contributed to seven textbooks on thoracic surgery.
I am a member of the Faculty of the HST Introductory Course in Cardiothoracic Surgery, at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I am a member of the Faculty of the European School of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Bergamo, Italy.
