23 May 2012 - Proton beam therapy coming to UCLH
The government recently announced a large amount of funding to bring proton radiotherapy to the UK. University College London Hospitals (UCLH) will be one of 2 sites delivering this treatment to patients across the NHS.
Proton beam radiotherapy uses high energy particle radiation to treat cancers with high precision and is particularly useful in childhood cancers where it has the potential to reduce the long term side effects of treatment. Patients who might benefit from proton beam treatment include children and teenagers, and those with complex brain, head and neck, bone and soft tissue tumours. There is currently no proton facility in the UK and patients who need proton radiotherapy as part of their treatment are sent abroad. It is anticipated that the 2 new proton beam centres at UCLH in London and The Christie hospital in Manchester will start treating patients in 2017.
